Student Life

LSU in Shreveport expects each student to exhibit honor in all phases of University life, academic as well as social. Conduct and personal appearance should be in harmony with socially accepted standards, reflecting credit upon the student, the student's peers, and the University. LSU in Shreveport expects each student to be honest in every aspect of campus life and further expects cooperation with both faculty and staff in order to create an atmosphere conducive to learning and professional growth.

The University may deny admission, readmission, or continued enrollment to any student whose behavior is or may be disruptive, dangerous, or abusive.

Each student is expected to assume responsibility for being familiar with all University rules and regulations concerning good citizenship as outlined in the Student Handbook and to use the handbook as a guide while enrolled at LSU in Shreveport.

Orientation

The faculty and staff of LSU in Shreveport are eager to help the student make a satisfactory transition from high school to college or from another college to LSU in Shreveport. Student Orientation Advising and Registration (SOAR) provides entering freshmen specific information about the academic and social environment at LSU in Shreveport while giving them a personalized head start in advising and registration. A separate orientation session for transfer students, held prior to each registration, covers topics of importance to this group of students.

Counseling

Counseling services are provided through the Counseling Center. The counselor's approach is to prevent major issues in the student's life from becoming problems that interfere with academic progress, and counseling sessions may become personal growth experiences.

Students may receive professional assistance in personal issues, educational concerns, and career planning.

Assistance is provided through individual appointments, group counseling, educational workshops and seminars, self-help information, and testing. While there may be a nominal fee for testing, all other counseling services are free.

Information on the ACT, NTE, and GRE is also available from this office.

Housing

Some of the nation's finest on-campus housing is available to the LSU in Shreveport student. The University Court Apartments accommodate over 450 students in luxurious four-bedroom and efficiency apartments. Floor plans feature spacious living areas, private bedrooms, and full-service kitchens. The community is surrounded by an eight-foot perimeter fence with electronically controlled limited access. Amenities include an outdoor pool, jacuzzi, sand volleyball court, and a clubhouse with a big screen TV. An academic environment coupled with an array of educational, recreational, and social programming, coordinated by an on-site residence-life staff, enhances the overall college experience for the LSU in Shreveport student. Services for Students with Disabilities

The University assures students with disabilities equal opportunity to reach the same level of achievement as other students in the most integrated setting appropriate to the individual's needs. No qualified student shall be excluded from participation in, be denied benefits of, or otherwise be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity. Services for students with disabilities are available through the Counseling Center. Students who are having problems or need assistance should contact the Coordinator of Services for Students with Disabilities, Room 227 of the Administration Building (797-5365).

Tutorial Assistance

To assist students in academic life, the University offers several kinds of tutoring:

Math Help Lab

Tutorial assistance for students currently enrolled in mathematics courses is available in the Math Help Lab, Bronson Hall 404. Lab hours are posted on the door and may change from semester to semester. Students interested should ask their instructor about tutorial assistance.

Statistics Lab

The Department of Management and Marketing has a statistics laboratory to provide assistance to BADM 280 and 282 students. Inquiry may be made through the course instructor or at the department office located in the Business Administration - Education Building (Room 301A).

Accounting Department Tutoring

The Accounting Department provides tutors to assist students in accounting principles and intermediate accounting. Inquiry may be made through the course instructor or by visiting the department office located in the Business Administration-Education Building (Room 339B).

Tutorial assistance is available in departments other than those listed. All departmental assistance, however, depends largely upon the availability of student tutors. For this reason schedules vary from semester to semester.

Ed Tech Lab

The College of Education maintains a state-of-the-art educational technology laboratory in Room 215 of the Business and Education Building. This Macintosh Laboratory is equipped with hardware and software for every purpose appropriate to preparing students for teaching in the K-12 schools. This includes the technology to create print materials, compact discs, classroom multimedia presentations, and integrated technology products. Assistance is available by the laboratory director and student assistants.

Fine Arts Lab

The Fine Arts Department maintains a small Mactinosh computer lab in Bronson Hall 132, which is used by students in the field of graphic design. The lab houses Power Macintosh computers, zip drives, scanners, black and white printers, and color printers. Typical software programs in this particular lab include QuarkXPress, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.

The Foreign Language Multimedia Center

The Foreign Language Multimedia Center houses two complete, complementary laboratory facilities including an audio lab with 24 stations for aural/oral listening and practice. The newly installed multimedia lab offers fifteen computers with CD-ROM. Four stations are also equipped with laser disk readers.

Tutorial Assistance for Veterans

Tutorial assistance is available for VA students enrolled at least half-time and having a deficiency in a particular academic subject. The student is invited to seek assistance through the Office of Admissions and Records.

Computer Laboratories

Computer Laboratories are set up across campus for student's use: the Computer Science Laboratory is in BE 114; the Business Laboratories are in BE 201 and 203; the Ed Tech Laboratory is in BE 218; and the Writing Center is in BH 263. Lab hours vary but are posted at each facility.
 
Career Planning and Placement Services

The Career Planning and Placement Center (ADM 230) assists all students and alumni with employment. The center supplements academic programs by providing advice on career exploration, information on possible careers, and strategies for success in the job market.

Freshmen and sophomores should go to the center for help in determining occupations related to their majors, for gaining work experience in related fields, and for obtaining part-time jobs. Juniors and seniors can receive help with their career search that includes evaluation of resumes, tips on interviewing, on-campus interviews with prospective employers, and leads to possible employment.

Seniors and graduate students should register with the Career Center during their next-to-last semester.

Personal Services-Police

Emergencies. In an emergency, University Police should be contacted at 797-5082 during duty hours and at 455-5497 during non-duty hours. Medical emergency procedures are posted on bulletin boards in each building with names of persons to be contacted.

Lost and Found. Any student finding items belonging to someone else should take the articles to the Lost and Found Office, Administration Building, Room 124. A student whose books or personal articles are missing should go immediately to this office and describe what has been lost. Articles that have been in storage for a considerable time will be donated to charities.

Intercollegiate Athletics

LSU in Shreveport began an NCAA Division III athletic program in the spring of 1990. For information about the current status of the program contact the Director of Athletics (HPE 104).

Intramural and Recreational Sports

LSU in Shreveport provides a comprehensive and varied program of both competitive and recreational sports for students, faculty, and staff. The program offers competition in men's, women's, and coed divisions for individual, dual, and team sports. Schedules, registration, and other information may be obtained on the second floor of the University Center or by calling 797-5350.

University Center

Facilities.The University Center features a complete bookstore, a cafeteria, a billiards and table tennis game room, an art gallery, a ballroom, a theater, a television room, meeting rooms, student offices, and a lobby furnished for comfortable lounging.

Programs. The University Student Activities Board provides many of the social, entertainment, and cultural activities on campus. The Activities Board sponsors events such as monthly art exhibits, dances, lobby concerts and demonstrations, a Fall Fest, a Spring Fling, speakers, special festivals, and trips. Membership on the Student Activities Board is available to all LSU in Shreveport students.

Publications

The Almagest

The eight- to twelve-page newspaper is published weekly during the regular school term, except holidays and examination periods. The Almagest informs students and faculty about news at LSU in Shreveport. All students are invited to explore the opportunity to work on the Almagest as editors, reporters, cartoonists, contributing writers, and photographers. The various newspaper duties allow students to learn the fundamentals and mechanics of reporting news.

Spectra

Spectra, a literary magazine, is published each May by students interested in imaginative writing. All students are invited to submit for publication poems, essays, short stories, cover designs, or photographs to the Spectra staff through The Writing Center, Bronson Hall 263.

Student Life

Student Life at LSU in Shreveport is published four times each year by the Department of Student Activities. Departments and student organizations wishing to publicize events to the students of LSU in Shreveport are encouraged to submit articles, graphics, and photographs to Student Life, Department of Student Activities, University Center, Room 224.

Student Consumer Information

Upon request, the University will provide information to a student on the following: (1) all financial aid programs administered by the institution including federal, state, and institutional programs; (2) procedures and forms to be completed, criteria for selection and for determining the amount of the award; (3) rights and responsibilities of students under the federal programs, including criteria for continued eligibility, and criteria for determining "good standing" and "satisfactory progress" and information on how to reestablish "good standing" and "satisfactory progress" for those who have failed to maintain these standards; (4) means of making award payments to students and frequency of such payments; (5) terms of loans received by a student and sample repayment schedules; (6) general terms and conditions applicable to student employment; (7) cost of attending the University, including tuition, fees, books, supplies, room and board, transportation for students living off campus or at home, and any additional programs in which the student indicates an interest; (8) the University policy for refunding a portion of fees to resigning students and the policy governing refunds owed by a resigning student to the grant and loan programs; (9) academic programs, including current degree programs, physical facilities, and faculty; (10) student retention; and (11) number and percentage of students completing programs.
