Mission

The Noel Memorial Library is concerned with the intellectual, cultural growth, and development of the University community. The mission of the Library is to participate actively in the educational program of LSU in Shreveport by collecting, organizing, making readily available, and assisting in the use of materials by students, faculty, and staff.

The objectives of the Noel Memorial Library are:

Collections

Main

Open stacks containing over 250,000 items are organized according to Library of Congress Classification. Access to the LSU in Shreveport collection is through MAVEN.

MAVEN. Online catalog for materials in the LSU in Shreveport Collections cataloged since January 1981. This complements the card catalog which has records for materials cataloged prior to January 1981.

LOUIS. (Louisiana Online University Information System) provides online access to the catalogs of other Louisiana academic libraries and to selected indexes. As of January, 1996, it provides access to over 3 million bibliographic records.

LOUISIANA LIBRARY NETWORK. Online system providing access to indexing and abstracting services.

INTERNET. Is accessible at no cost at computers located throughout the Library building.

Documents

The Library is a select depository of the United States Government Publications Office. Federal Documents are shelved in open stacks according to Superintendent of Documents Classification. The Marcive CD-ROM Index provides access to this collection.

The Library is also a depository for Louisiana State Documents. Items are shelved in open stacks according to Louisiana State Documents Classification. The "Public Documents" catalog at reference provides access to this collection.

Reference

The Reference Collection includes a core of basic encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, directories, bibliographies, handbooks, and yearbooks. Indexes and abstracts covering all subjects in the university curricula are available in print and online format.

Special Collections

Faculty Collection

A non-circulating collection of materials authored by LSU in Shreveport Faculty. It includes books, dissertations, papers presented, articles, monographs, and artistic materials. All items are cataloged.

Archives and Special Collections

Archival records and historical manuscripts are housed in a closed-stack non-circulating collection. Emphasis is on preserving, organizing, and making available primary source materials relating to or originating in Northwest Louisiana.

James Smith Noel Collection

A private collection of 250,000 volumes on permanent loan to the University. This is a closed-stack non-circulating collection. Materials are organized in 128 broad subject areas.

Services

Reserve

Materials may be placed on closed reserve for use in the Library or on limited circulation for varying periods. Faculty members should discuss their particular reserve needs with members of the circulation staff in advance of giving an assignment requiring the use of the materials. All items placed on reserve must comply with U.S. Copyright Laws and Regulations.

Interlibrary Loan

Patrons may request materials from other libraries in accordance with the terms of the National Interlibrary Loan Code.

Online Searching

The Library has access to over three hundred bibliographic databases via the DIALOG system. This retrieval service is available on a fee recovery basis. Appointments are recommended with a reference librarian.

Louisiana Library Network

LSU in Shreveport is a member of LLN, providing access to multiple online databases and catalogs of Louisiana Academic libraries via LOUIS, the Louisiana Online University Information System.

Instruction

Reference librarians provide instructional sessions for classes in the use of subject-specific research materials and in the development of university-level information skills.
