Secondary Education

horizontal line

The Student majoring in secondary education may choose a curriculum in (1) English education, (2) mathematics education, (3) mathematics/mathematics education, (4) science education (with options in biology, chemistry, or physics) or (5) social studies education.

Students in secondary education have three ways of enhancing their degrees:

Additional Certification Endorsements--Secondary education majors in biology and chemistry must also have additional certification endorsement in general science. Other secondary education majors have the option of taking additional certification endorsement in one of the several areas listed below after the major curricula.

Second Degrees--Students may earn a second degree in their chosen discipline by taking a minimum of 30 additional hours and by meeting other requirements of the appropriate department and college. (See also "Requirements for a Second Bachelor's Degree" under "University Regulations.")

Multiple Majors--Students may earn a degree with two majors, in the same college or in different colleges, by getting the permission of deans and by completing all requirements for both majors. (See also "Requirements for Multiple Majors" under "University Regulations.") The College of Education and the College of Sciences have established a curriculum, listed below, for a double major both in secondary education-mathematics and in mathematics. Students seeking multiple majors in other fields should work out a degree plan with their adviser.

Certification

Post-Baccalaureate Certification
Those with non-education bachelor's degrees can become certified to teach in public schools by meeting the requirements of Louisiana's Standards for Certification of School Personnel, published by the Louisiana Department of Education. Applicants must have earned a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution and must have an overall grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. The requirements for certification and procedures for admission to the program are as follows:

Requirements for Certification
Candidates for certification must meet the following requirements. Some requirements apply only to secondary certification.

General Education: Completion of all general education requirements of the University's teacher education program. Most applicants will have met this requirement in earning their bachelor's degrees.

Specialized Education (secondary only): Sufficient education in the area of certification to meet the state's minimum requirements. Applicants with undergraduate majors in the area will ordinarily have met this requirement.

Professional Education (secondary only): Nineteen hours credit in education and psychology courses.

Grades: A grade of C or above for all English courses, all education courses, and all courses taken at the University to complete other general education or specialized education requirements.

Practical Experience: Student teaching or a one-year internship in the area of certification.

Examination: Completion of all six portions of the PRAXIS Examinations with appropriate scores as required by the State of Louisiana.

Procedures for Admission: Admission to the program usually occurs in two stages--an initial admission to the University in order to complete any lower-level requirements and a final admission to the Teacher Education Program.

For initial admission, qualified students should contact the Office of Admissions and Records to obtain appropriate forms. During their first registration, students meet with an adviser from the College of Education to have their transcripts evaluated and to begin laying out an individual plan of study.

For admission to the Teacher Education Program, students must complete all lower-level education courses in their area of certification and take the first portion of the PRAXIS-PreProfessional Skills Tests (PPSTs) in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. They can then obtain application forms from the Curriculum Resource Center (BE 213) and submit the completed forms to the Teacher Education Program Admission and Retention (TEPAR) Committee.
