LSUS center fielder Chris Frye continued his hot hitting of late with a 2-2 performance in game 1 versus Paul Quinn University Tigers Tuesday afternoon. Frye pitched in with a two run homerun in the fourth inning and a bases loaded triple in the 6th inning to give him 5 RBI and 4 runs scored in the Pilots 16-5 victory over Tigers.
The Tigers managed to get 3 runs in the first off Gene Stevens (5-4) to take a 3-2 lead, but Stevens settled in and went four innings only allowing 2 earned runs on 3 hits, while collecting 7 strikeouts for the win.
The Tigers jumped out to a 3-1 lead in game two scoring single runs in the 1st, 3rd and 4th innings while Miguel Bundle had a strangle hold on the Pilots offense who only managed two hits through the first 4 innings. The Pilots rallied for 3 runs across in the fifth and 1 in the sixth inning which gave them a 5-3 lead heading into the bottom of the 7th.
The Tigers managed put together a rally of their own in the bottom of the 7th and had the tying run on second base with one out. Hernandez hit a ball up the middle that looked as if it would tie the game at 5-5, but Pilot shortstop Dustin Bissonnette ranged to his left to knock the ball down and throw the speedy Hernandez out at first. With the score 5-4 and the tying run on third base, Gray hit a ball deep in the hole at shortstop and Bissonette once again saved the day for the Pilots with a tremendous backhand play to get the runner at first and give the Pilots a 5-4 victory.
Bryan Cooksey was 2-2 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored to lead the Pilots offensive in game two. Sam Alphonse (8-3) entered the game in the fifth inning and only allowed one earned run on 3 hits to collect his 8th win of the season which leads the Pilots pitching staff.
