Head coach Rocke Musgraves and his LSUS Pilots traveled to Thomasville, GA this past Monday which was day one of the Pilots longest road trip of the year. The Pilots were scheduled to play 7 games over a 5 day span versus teams which LSUS hopes to see in mid-May when NAIA post-season action begins.
Tuesday saw LSUS match up with the Thomas University Night Hawks (14-13) in double-header action. The Pilots looked as if they were on cruise control as they headed into the bottom of the 6th inning with a 6-1 lead. The Night Hawks however managed to capitalize on two Pilots errors which kept the inning alive and allowed a 2 out grand slam to tie the game at 6-6. Neither team managed to score until the bottom of the ninth inning saw the Night Hawks flare a hit into right field on a hit and run play which allowed the winning run to score from second and give Thomas University a 7-6 win. In game two of the double header the Pilots broke even with the Night Hawks on the day as they escaped with a 7-4 win to improve to (18-11) on the year.
The Pilots then loaded their vans and headed to Auburn, Montgomery to take on Auburn University of Montgomery and Faulkner University Wednesday evening. In game one of the double-header the Pilots squared off against AUM who jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. LSUS chipped away at the AUM lead and managed to take a 6-3 lead in the 5th inning. AUM however took advantage of the Pilots defense in the sixth inning which allowed four unearned runs to cross the plate for AUM to give them a 7-6 lead, a lead which LSUS could not recover from as they dropped their second 1 run ball game of the week, 7-6 to AUM.
After a disappointing start to their road trip, LSUS found themselves up against the #6 ranked team in the country in Faulkner University (28-8). The Pilots sent Sophomore Tyler Lewis to the mound who pitched a complete game, 5 hit master-piece which only allowed Faulkner to score a single run in the sixth inning. Chase Cox supplied all the offense the Pilots needed with a 3-run homerun in the bottom of the 3rd inning, his first of the year. Cox finished 3-4 on the day with 5 RBI in the 10-1 route over Faulkner.
LSUS was idle Thursday as they had to travel to Mobile, Al to take on Springhill College in GCAC action. The Pilots dropped their third one run ball game of the week Friday night when they dropped a 4-3 decision to the Badgers.
The Pilots managed to salvage their trip with a sweep of the double-header Saturday versus the Badgers which improved their season record to 21-13 on the year, 11-7 in conference which sits them alone in second place in the GCAC, 6 games behind first place William Carey College.
LSUS will be in action again at Pilot field on Tuesday, March 30 when they will take on Paul Quinn University.
