Mobile, Al- The LSUS Pilots (8-3, 4-1GCAC) took on the University of Mobile Rams (2-13, 1-4GCAC) in double-header action Saturday. The Rams jumped out on top with 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning off Pilot ace Gene Stevens in game one. Stevens (3-0) settled in after the first and threw 6 straight shut-out innings. The Pilots scratched across single runs in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 6th innings to earn a 4-3 victory on Stevens third complete game of the year. Mobile managed 3 runs on 7 hits and fanned 4 times versus the Pilots hurler. Pilot senior Andy Mills finished 1-2 and scored 2 of the 4 LSUS runs. Patrick Jolley was 1-4 in the game with 2 RBI.
In game, 2 LSUS sent freshman Kevin Jewell (1-0) to the hill for his first start in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action. Five runs in the 6th inning by the Pilots broke a 2-2 tie and proved to be all the offense the Pilots needed to hand the Rams their second loss of the day. Jewell threw a complete game for the win, allowing 3 runs on 9 hits and 4 walks while collecting 2 strikeouts. A Dustin Bissonnett single with 2 strikes plated 2 runs the Pilots 5 run outburst in the 6th. Bissonnett finished 2-4 with 2 RBI. Teammate Andy Mills pitched in on offense with a 2-4 effort and a run batted in.
The Pilots are in action again Sunday at 1:00pm when they will look to complete a three game sweep of the Rams and gain a share of first place in the GCAC standings.
