William Carey Defeats No. 15 LSUS in Wild Game at Pilot Field (2/13/2009)

Shreveport, LA. –  On an extremely foggy night at Pilot Field, the visiting William Carey Crusaders scored six runs via fly balls that were lost in the fog, as they picked up a 9-3 victory over the No. 15 LSUS Pilots.

William Carey scored two runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings courtesy of RBI triples on three fly balls that were misplayed by the LSUS outfield.

In the top of the seventh, WCU’s David Trisler popped a two out, two-strike pitch into shallow centerfield, but Matt Lawrence was unable to locate the ball amidst the fog, as Carey scored two runs to take their first lead of the game, 4-3.

WCU put two more on the board in the eighth, once again with a two-out triple on a ball that was lost in the fog by Lawrence.  Jordan Prout lined Richard Pharr’s pitch into centerfield, scoring two Crusaders as the ball sailed over Lawrence’s head.

By the ninth inning, you could not even see the LSUS outfielders from the press box as the fog had become so thick, and William Carey extended their lead to 9-3 over LSUS as Jason Terrell tripled in two more runs on a fly ball to right field that was unable to be seen off the bat.

Derek Thompson pitched 7 1/3 strong innings for the Crusaders, holding a Pilots’ offense that is among the nation’s best to just three runs.

Pharr (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season, as the Pilots move to 9-2 overall and 6-1 in GCAC play.  Pilot starter Justin Ennis tossed six innings, giving up just two runs on three hits.

Andrew Brouillette led the Pilots offensively, finishing the night 3-for-4 with a double.  Andrew Blubaugh added two hits in the loss, as he and Brouillette were the only Pilots to record multiple hits on the night.

LSUS and William Carey will square off again tomorrow afternoon in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 P.M at Pilot Field.
