WOMEN'S SOCCER: LSU-SHREVEPORT SHOCKS SOUTHEASTERN, 2-1

HAMMOND – LSU-Shreveport’s Shaderia Evans scored on a free kick with less than two minutes remaining in regulation to snap a 1-1 tie and send the Lady Pilots to a 2-1 upset victory over Southeastern Louisiana Friday afternoon at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.
Southeastern (2-4-1) out-shot LSU-Shreveport, 16-4, but had difficulty finding the net. The Lady Pilots (9-2) earned their ninth consecutive victory.
The Lady Lions were playing for the first time in nearly two weeks and the rust was evident in the first half. Neither team could get anything going offensively in the initial 45 minutes. Late in the opening period, Southeastern’s Jen Mongiardi appeared to put the Lady Lions ahead, but an official called offsides on Southeastern, negating the goal.
Southeastern came out on fire in the second half and wasted little time taking the lead. Janae Sheldon drilled a shot off LSU-S goalkeeper Sarah McLean and Lindsey Dyck sent the rebound into the net for a 1-0 Southeastern advantage.
Southeastern had several other scoring opportunities at the match progressed, but could not convert. In the 77th minute, Katrina Blackwell slipped behind the Southeastern defense and scored off a perfectly played ball by teammate Calandre Singh to tie the score. After a Southeastern foul deep in their territory, Evans broke the tie with a free kick over leaping Southeastern goalkeeper Holly Moran.
The Lady Lions will look to regroup on Sunday, when they head to Natchitoches for a 1 p.m. match at Southland Conference foe Northwestern State.
