February 02, 2013
MARSHALL, Tex. - The LSU Shreveport Lady Pilots basketball team made a statement on Saturday afternoon proving they are worthy of a top 25 ranking with a 77-76 win over no. 17 Wiley Lady Wildcats on the road in Red River Athletic Conference play.
Wiley (18-3, 12-2 RRAC) took the lead with eight seconds to play but the Lady Pilots came right back to steal the game as Christy Willis drove the court and passed to Jenna Diakos who netted the game-winner two seconds to play.
Sharde Henry led all scorers with 25 points while grabbing nine rebounds while Willis also broke 20 with 21 points and pulled down 10 boards for her first double-double of the season. Diakos finished with 15 points after pouring in the game-winner.
LSUS (17-3, 12-2 RRAC) moves into a tie for second place with Wiley in the regular season standings after blazing the net for 46-percent shooting but still committed 25 turnovers which kept Wiley in the game as they capitalized outscoring the Lady Pilots 37-11 off turnovers.
The Lady Pilots won the battle of the boards out rebounding the home squad 46-36 as Wiley had no double-digit rebounder while LSUS just one but all of the Lady Pilots that played except one had at least two rebounds.
The free-throw line was kind to the Lady Pilots especially in the second half going 14-18 to finish at 82-percent (19-23) from the charity stripe which helped the Lady Pilots overcome their six-point deficit at the half.
LSUS will take on Texas College in their next game Thursday, Feb. 7, at The Dock at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Pilots have won seven games in a row and are a game and a half behind Our Lady of the Lake for the top spot in the regular season standings.
