Weightlifters to Compete in World University Championships

Six LSU Shreveport weightlifters will be among the 15 member USA Team that will compete in the World University Championships in Taichung City, Chinese Taipei from July 1 -5, 2010.
The LSUS lifters include Hilary Katzenmeier, a junior from Abilene, Kan.; Megan Kranz, a junior from Oviedo, Fla.; Samantha Turnbull, a sophomore from Daytona Beach, Fla.; Sean Hutchinson, a senior from Palatka, Fla.; in the 62 kg category, Mike Soha, a senior from Jacksonville, Fla.; and Aaron Adams, a junior from Vineland, N.J. Katzenmeier finished third at the 2008 World University Championships. Dr. Kyle Pierce, associate professor of Kinesiology and Health Sciences at LSU Shreveport, was asked to be one of the coaches at the championships.
The World University Championships is a self-funded event with the cost of the event for each lifter at approximately $2,500 to $3,000. For information about contributing to the fund, contact Dr. Kyle Pierce at 318-344-1561.
Earlier this spring, LSU Shreveport finished first in the Men’s, Women’s, and Coed Team divisions at the National Collegiate Championships; and last weekend, Chase Brossette finished first in the Paralympic Powerlifting 90 kg category at the University of Central Oklahoma Endeavor Games for Athletes with Physical Disabilities. Freshman Grebil Copp finished second in the category with a lift of 265.
At the USA Weightlifting National Championships in Peoria, IL, LSUS graduate Erin Wallace won the 75 kg category. Wallace also picked up gold medals in the snatch with a lift of 98 kg and in the clean and jerk finishing with 119 kg. Freshman Suzy Sanchez finished second in the 48 kg category. She also finished second in the snatch with a lift of 50 kg and second in the clean and jerk with a lift of 69 kg. Sean Hutchinson won the gold medal in the snatch in the 62 kg category.
