Vaughan's Two Second-Half Goals Propel Lady Pilots to Victory in Season Opener

August 25, 2007

Shreveport, La. - After a scoreless first half of play, junior Julia Vaughan netted two second-half goals to assist the LSUS Lady Pilots in a 2-1 victory over Union University on Saturday afternoon.

LSUS got on the board first as Vaughan captured her first goal of the season at the 48:10 mark.  Junior college transfer Layton Yancey passed the ball down the middle of the field to a streaking Vaughan who punched the ball in from 15 yards out.

Union responded with a furious offensive rally over the next five minutes of play; however, they came up empty after LSUS goalkeeper Kelsi McNew made three consecutive saves.  It wasn’t until the 81st minute of the game when the Lady Bulldogs would finally find the back of the net on an unassisted goal by Cara Pasley.

With just over three minutes left to play in regulation, Vaughan registered her second goal of the day which proved to be the game-winner.  After a Union foul, junior Shederia Evans quickly approached the ball and made a long, beautiful pass over the defense to Vaughan who made one dribble move and scored the game-winning goal.

LSUS outshot Union 16-10 for the game, but the Lady Bulldogs would register two more shots on goal than the Lady Pilots.  McNew picked up seven saves on the afternoon to help lead the Lady Pilots to victory.

LSUS will be back in action next Saturday as they take on the #2 ranked team in the nation Martin Methodist in Martin, Tenn.
