October 30, 2005
Mobile, AL---The LSUS Lady Pilots were one win away from winning a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference championship Saturday night, but ran into the University of Mobile Lady Rams who exploded for six goals, four of which came in the second half, to take the GCAC title by a final score of 6-1 over the Lady Pilots.
The Lady Rams created a scoring chance on their first possession of the game as Lene Bjerkeli escaped the Lady Pilots defense and found herself on a breakaway but blasted a shot just wide of the goal. The Lady Rams Bridget Godwin opened the scoring at the 11:21 mark after her attempted cross floated over LSUS goalkeeper Sarah McLean and curled just inside the left post giving UM a 1-0 lead. Evelina Viiri added a second goal in the 42 minute giving UM a 2-0 lead heading into the half.
After out shooting LSUS 15-3 in the first half, UM continued to control the tempo in the second half and poured in three goals in three minutes which was highlighted Viiri’s second goal of the match to put the game out of reach as the Lady Rams built a 5-0 lead.
Despite being outplayed most of the match, the Lady Pilots played found some success in the last 10:00 of the match and Calandre Singh put LSUS on the board after crashing the net after a loose ball and knocked herself and the ball behind UM goalkeeper Ingibjorg Johannesdottir making it a 5-1 game.
UM added a goal in the 87:00 minute when defended Anna Ellingsen blasted a shot from 30 yards out that beat a diving McLean to round out the Lady Rams scoring.
The Lady Pilots hope that their play in the last 10:00 of the match can carry over to Tuesday night as they will square off against the same UM squad in the first round of the Region XIII Tournament. “We would have loved to win a GCAC championship. We are very proud of what we accomplished to get there, but we have to keep in mind that the regional tournament is the path you must take to get to the national championship,” comments Lady Pilot head coach Jed Jones.
LSUS and UM will take the field again Tuesday afternoon at 4:00pm in Round I of the Region XIII Tournament.
