Two First-half Goals Give Lady Pilots 2-0 Victory over Mobile
September 22, 2007
Shreveport, La.- The LSUS offense didn't miss a beat on Saturday after scoring eight goals in their previous contest. Junior Julia Vaughan got the Lady Pilots on the board just 25 seconds into the match on her ninth goal of the season. Vaughan weaved in and out of several Mobile defenders before squaring up and firing a shot into the back of the net for the game's first goal.
The Lady Pilots came up empty-handed on several shot attempts over the next 25 minutes before freshman Caitlin Smith finally knocked a shot in from about 12 yards out. Smith's goal came after junior Shaderia Evans rebounded a blocked shot attempt and made a beautiful touch pass to Smith for the goal. Smith's goal gave the Lady Pilots a 2-0 lead that they would not relinquish for the rest of the game.
Mobile (1-9, 0-2) threatened on a couple of different occasions in the second half, but they could not find a goal in the contest due in large part to an aggressive LSUS defense and steady goalkeeping by Kelsi McNew.
McNew picked up the win in goal for the Lady Pilots (7-3, 2-0), recording her second consecutive shutout and fifth on the season.
LSUS outshot the visitors from Mobile 16-7 on the game, en route to a 2-0 win.
The Lady Pilots will have a nine day break between games before facing Belhaven College for the second time this season. LSUS defeated Belhaven 2-0 in Jackson, Miss. earlier in the season. The Lady Pilots and Lady Blazers will square off again on October 2 at "The Swamp" on the LSUS campus. Kickoff is set for 3:00 PM.
