Three Pilots Named to All-GCAC Team, McDowell Selected as Coach of the Year
March 04, 2008
Hattiesburg, Miss. - The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference announced today the 2007-2008 Men's Basketball All-Conference Team, Coach, and Players of the Year.
LSUS seniors Travis Cash, Jamon Morris and Josh Porter represent the 2007-08 GCAC regular season champions on the All-GCAC team, while head coach Chad McDowell was named the GCAC Coach of the Year.
In addition to being named to the All-Conference team, Porter was also named as the GCAC Player of the Year. The 6’2 senior from Shreveport averaged a career-high 22.8 PPG this year, helping lead the Pilots to a 27-2 regular season record. Porter was twice-named the GCAC Player of the Week this season, while also eclipsing the 1,000-point milestone for his career with a 40-point performance versus Spring Hill College on January 17. Porter has averaged over 20 PPG in his career at LSUS, leading the Pilots to a 59-7 during that span.
Cash was selected to the All-Conference team for the first time in his LSUS career, and Morris was honored in his second consecutive season with the Pilots. Cash, also a two-time GCAC Player of the Week, finished the regular season averaging 14.2 PPG and 7.2 RPG, while Morris added 14.6 PPG and 10.8 RPG for the Pilots. Morris also ended the regular season with a NAIA-leading 21 double-doubles.
LSUS’ Coach McDowell was rewarded for his team’s record-breaking success this season by being named the GCAC Coach of the Year for the third time in five years at LSUS. McDowell helped guide his 2007-08 squad to a school-record 17 consecutive wins to begin the season, including a No. 2 national ranking. The Pilots also defeated three NCAA Division 1 opponents (McNeese St., Centenary and Northwestern St.) this year for the first time in school history. McDowell has posted a 128-34 (.790) record through his first five seasons at the helm of the LSUS men’s basketball program.
