Sporting News has Pilots a top NAIA charts
October 28, 2013
CHARLOTTE, N. C. - The 2013-14 Sporting News College Basketball Magazine lists the Red River Athletic Conference's pre-season men's favorites, the LSU Shreveport Pilots, as the no. 1 NAIA team in the nation in their preseason NAIA top 25 poll. Included as a part of their NAIA All-America Team are Pilots Brandon Davis on the First Team and Dundrecous Nelson along with Will Nelson on the Honorable Mention squad.
Second-year head coach Kyle Blankenship credits the former LSUS teams with an assist in this recognition. "Being picked to win the conference and No. 1 in the Sporting News preseason poll is a testament to the LSU Shreveport program over the past ten years. Without the success this program has had over the last decade, I don't think we would be in this position. No matter the preseason predictions, our goal every year is to continue the winning tradition here at LSUS and be the best team we can possibly be."
The Pilots will find out tomorrow afternoon (Oct. 29) where they will be ranked by the NAIA when the NAIA Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 poll is released. Coach Blankenship cautions that at this point the rankings are just numbers. "In the grand scheme of things, being ranked No. 1 in the preseason doesn't mean much. However, I think it's pretty neat for our program to receive the national recognition, and I know that it is exciting for our players."
Coach Blankenship is aware that every game will matter and that his team will get the best effort each opponent has to offer and that the preseason ranking will not mean much in a month or two. "It's not hard to stay humble right now. Everyone in the country is undefeated as of today. Our team realizes we haven't accomplished anything yet, and I know our guys care more about how our season finishes than where we are ranked to begin it."
LSUS will begin the new season on the road in Humble, Texas, on Friday, November 1 as they meet St. Gregory's College in the Small College Tip-off Classic. The following day-Saturday, November 2-will mark the Pilots' home opener at The Dock against The College of Science and Arts of Oklahoma at 7:30 p.m.
