Smith named RRAC Player of the Year

SHREVEPORT, La. - LSU Shreveport's first baseman Kevin Smith took home the Red River Athletic Conference's most prestigious honor as he was named Player of the Year on Friday night at the conference tournament banquet in the University Center on the campus of LSUS to kick off this year's tournament. The Pilots landed four on the All-Conference First Team, three on the Second Team, and two on the Gold Glove Team.Smith, a senior from Tacoma, Washington, was also the unanimous decision to be selected as the First Team first baseman. He led the Pilots to the regular season conference title with a .439 batting average, 13 home runs, and 58 runs batted in.
Chase Wentz, a senior from Sarepta, Louisiana, was selected to the First Team as he led the Pilot's outfield with a .376 batting average, nine home runs, 32 RBIs, and 26 stolen bases.
Andrew Brouillette, a senior from Benton, Louisiana, was named one of two catchers on this year's First Team as he hit .290 with 13 home runs and 48 RBIs.
Jared Mortensen, a junior from Abbotsford, B.C., was the lone Pilot pitcher named to either team as he was a starting pitcher on the First Team. He had the best winning percentage among all other starters with a 7-1 record and a 4.78 ERA.
Michael Diffie was selected as the second baseman to the Second Team with a .364 batting average, four home runs, and 26 RBIs. He also swiped seven out of eight attempts on the bases.
Shawn Moy and Curtis Beaudoin were the other two Pilots named to the Second Team. Moy, a senior third baseman from Des Plaines, Illinios, batted .292 with 8 homers and 42 RBIs while Beaudoin, a senior outfielder from Lethbridge, Alberta, hit .349 with four home runs and 43 RBIs.
Moy and Brouillette were selected to the Gold Glove Team for their outstanding defensive play throughout the year. Moy had a .928 fielding percentage as he made just 11 errors in 101 attempts while Brouillette played an error-free season behind the plate and threw out 11 of 16 base runners this year.
The no. 1 seeded Pilots (38-13) will play the final game of tomorrow in the first round of the RRAC Tournament at 6:30 p.m. at Pilot Field against the no. 6 seeded Texas College Steers (27-25). The first game of the day at 11:30 a.m. matches the no. 2 Northwood Knights (35-14) vs. the no. 5 Wiley College Wildcats (20-19) while the no. 3 Texas Wesleyan Rams (31-21) take on the no. 4 UT-Brownsville Scorpions (32-21) at 3:00 p.m.
