March 21, 2011

WACO, Tex. - Kevin Smith of LSU Shreveport earned a share of the Red River Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Week award for March 14-20, while LSUS' Jared Mortensen was recognized as the RRAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the same dates.

Smith, a senior first baseman from Tacoma, Wash., earned his second straight player of the week award with 12 RBIs in a 4-1 week for the Pilots. Most of his production came as LSUS won 2-of-3 at Northwood University (Texas). Smith was 3-for-5 in each of the first two games of the series, driving in six runs in a 12-3 win in the opener and collecting two RBIs in a game two loss. He closed out by going 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs in a 21-4 victory. In all, Smith was 9-of-18 hitting with five runs scored, four doubles and a pair of home runs. The Pilots moved ahead of Northwood in the RRAC standings at 14-1 with a mark of 23-8 on the season.

Mortensen, a junior right-hander from Abbotsford, B.C., picked up the win in the Pilots final game of the week against Northwood. He allowed only two hits in five innings of work, while striking out eight and walking two.
