May 08, 2006
Shreveport, LA---The Auburn University-Montgomery campus will play host to the 2006 NAIA Region XIII Baseball Tournament which will begin Wednesday, May 10th, and will conclude Saturday, May, 14th. The six team double elimination tournament bracket has been announced, and is highlighted by a Round 1 match-up between the No. 4 seeded LSUS Pilots (38-21) and the No. 3 seeded Lee University Flames (40-16). The host team, Auburn University-Montgomery (42-15) earned the No. 1 seed after capturing the Southern States Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship, and they will take on Berry College (33-24) who is coming in as the No. 6 seed after capturing the SSAC Conference Tournament Title. The Belhaven College Blazers (40-19) slipped into the No. 2 spot after claiming the 2006 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship, and they will match-up against the No.5 seed, Georgia Southwestern University (30-23).
Almost exactly one year ago, the LU Flames put an end to the Pilots 2005 season with an 8-5 victory in the 2005 NAIA Region XIII Tournament Championship. The Flames and Pilots represent arguably the two hottest teams in the 2006 version of the NAIA Region XIII Tournament, but only one team will advance to the second round in the winners bracket after Wednesday’s match-up that will begin at 12:00pm.
The matinee match-up features the GCAC Regular Season Champion BC Blazers. The Blazers were defeated for the 5th time in seven contests this season by the Pilots in the GCAC Tournament Championship, 7-2, but will look to rebound with a win against the tournament’s only at-large birth team, GSU Hurricanes. First pitch is slated for 3:30pm.
