The LSUS Pilots (5-2) hosted the Spring Hill Badgers (2-4) Friday night in the opening game of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference season. Pilot ace Gene Stevens (2-0) threw a complete game and defeated the Badgers 10-3. Stevens improved his record to 2-0 on the year and the Pilots are now 1-0 in the GCAC.
The Badgers led off the game with a double down the left field line but a strong throw by Pilot left fielder threw the Badger baserunner out trying to advance to third. The Pilots then scored in the bottom of the first when Andy Mills was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Pilots tacked on three more runs in the second inning and five in the fourth to take a 9-1 lead over the Badgers.
Spring Hill managed to score single runs in the 7th and 8th innings but Stevens kept the Badger offense in check with a dominant pitching performance. Stevens gave up 3 runs on 8 hits in his 9 innings of work.
The Pilots offense was led by Wesley Gray who finished 3-4 on the night with a double and 2 runs scored. Thomas McMannis was 2-3 2 runs scored and an RBI. LSUS lead off hitter Dustin Bissonette was 1-3 and scored 3 of the Pilots 10 runs.
