Pilots topple Tigers

September 04, 2012

MARSHALL, Tex. - Nelson Zelaya gave the keeper no chance as he scored the game-winning goal to help the LSU Shreveport Pilots defeat the East Texas Baptist University Tigers 2-1 on Tuesday evening at Cornish Field.

LSUS (3-1) scored the first goal of the contest as Ruben Mendoza sent a pass from a corner kick to the box that found the head of William Awagu (19:57) for his second goal of the year. The Tigers countered to tie the match with their lone goal of the game from Peter Fitzsimmons as he finished the pass from Juan Rameriz.

The Pilots had plenty of opportunities throughout the contest but the goals by Awagu and Zelaya were just enough as LSUS outshot the Tigers 18-13.

ETBU's (1-1) Zachary Barton had the most shots for the home team while LSUS' Alan Arroyo led the visitors with a total of six shots as his team just missed the frame several times throughout the night.

Caleb Sutter was credited the assist on the Zelaya goal as he crossed the ball back to the top of the 18 but he had several close chances to score himself especially when he nearly headed one in early in the first half of play.

Lance Quini was magnificent again for Coach Aguilar's Pilots as he made four saves in the game.

"I am really proud of the way we fought throughout the game tonight especially when they tied the game late we responded with the game-winner," said Aguilar.

The Pilots will host Faulkner University in their next game at The Swamp this Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
