Pilots Top Century Mark in 114-94 Victory Over ETBU
November 20, 2007
Marshall, Texas – The LSUS Pilots won their fifth consecutive game to start the season as they beat East Texas Baptist University 114-94 on Tuesday night.
“ETBU has played us very tough over the past four seasons, and it has never been easy to get a victory on their court,” said Coach Chad McDowell. “Anytime you win on the road by 20 points, you can chalk it up as a good win.”
The Pilots came out of the gates strong scoring on 9 of their first 10 possessions, and they never looked back after establishing an early 18-8 lead.
LSUS led by as many as 16 points with four minutes left in the first half, but a late 11-2 ETBU run capped off by a Nick Garrett 3-pointer at the buzzer pulled the Tigers to within seven at the half.
The seven-point halftime deficit would be as close as the Tigers would get for the rest of the night, as Josh Porter pushed the LSUS lead back to 14 points with seven straight points to begin the second half and the Pilots cruised to a 20-point victory.
Porter finished with a game-high 29 points leading an LSUS team that had seven players in double figures, including Travis Cash (13), Justin Berry (12) and Clarke Jackson (10).
“I think it speaks volumes of our unselfishness as a team to finish the game with seven players in double-figures and a season-high 23 assists,” added McDowell. “Overall, this was probably our best team effort of the season.”
Three Pilots also registered double-doubles on the evening. Jamon Morris and Chris Gatlin each had 12 points and 10 rebounds, while point guard Jared Stevenson finished the game with 11 points and 10 assists.
LSUS (5-0) will be back at home on Saturday for an afternoon contest versus UT-Tyler. Tip-off is set for 3:00 PM.
