Pilots thrash Bacone

February 25, 2011

SHREVEPORT, La. - The no. 13 LSU Shreveport Pilots baseball team dominated the Bacone College Warriors 14-0 in 7 innings on Friday night in Red River Athletic Conference play at Pilot Field. Three LSUS pitchers combined for a one-hit shutout.

The Pilots (10-6, 4-0 RRAC) scored early and often as they put eight runs on the board in the first two innings.  The offense belted three doubles in the first inning; the first from Chase Wentz, the second drove in two from Andrew Brouillette, and third drove in two more from Cody Causey. The second inning was highlighted by an RBI-double from Manny Estrada as they Pilots took an 8-0 lead after two complete innings of play.

LSUS did not score again until the bottom of the fifth when Michael Diffie and Allen Degges drove in runs on back-to-back doubles on consecutive pitches as the Pilots took a 10-0 advantage. Four more runs came across in the bottom of the sixth for some insurance to bring into effect the ten-run rule. They scored the four runs on four singles as Shawn Moy and Degges each drove in two runs with their hits.

Bacone (1-10, 0-4 RRAC) were overpowered at the plate by the Pilot's pitching staff as they struck out a total of nine times, eight of which came in the first five innings.

LSUS starter Ben Suit (3-2) picked up the win after tossing three scoreless innings giving one hit, walking one, and striking out six batters. Jared Mata tossed two scoreless innings in relief and struck out two batters. Scott Petroski threw the final two innings and struck out one as he also held the Bacone lineup to no hits.

Wentz was two for four while the NAIA RBI-leader Brouillette drove in three runs after a one for three performance at the plate. Causey was one for two with two RBIs as Moy drove in three and was one for three. Diffie was two for four and Degges was two for three with three RBIs.

The Pilots and Warriors will begin Saturday's double header at 1:00 at Pilot Field. Bacone will send right-hander Brandon Jackson (0-2, 4.09) to the mound in game one to face the right-hander Jared Mortensen (1-0, 4.70) of the Pilots. Bacone's right-hander Lawrence Lansenberry (0-2, 5.56) will get the start in the second game against the Pilot's left hander Cody Boutte (1-0, 7.04).
