Pilots take two from Paul Quinn
March 30, 2004
The LSUS Pilots played host to the Paul Quinn University Fighting Tigers (6-16) at Pilot Field Tuesday night. The Pilots didn’t take long getting to Tigers starting pitcher Bernard Pena as they put 5 runs across in the bottom of the first inning. After the first inning LSUS had collected 5 runs on 4 hits and collected 6 stolen bases.
The two teams exchanged single runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings before the Fighting Tigers clawed their way back into the ball game with a 4 run 4th inning off Pilot starter Levi Montoya (3-1). Montoya did not receive much help in the fourth as two defensive blunders by the Pilots allowed the Tigers to score 4 runs on only 3 hits in the inning.
LSUS answered with 4 runs of their own in the bottom of the 5th inning and went on to win game one of the double-header 13-7. LSUS shortstop Dustin Bissonnett was 3-4 with a double, 2 RBI and a run scored. Wesley Gray was 1-2 with an in the park homerun, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored for the Pilots. Bryan Cooksey pitched in with one hit in the game but collected 4 RBI in the 13-7 Pilot victory.
In game 2 the Pilots jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after the first inning. The Fighting Tigers starter Philip Hernandez had trouble finding the strike zone with the bases loaded as he walked in one batter and hit two more to account for 3 of the first 7 Pilot runs. Bryan Cooksey capped off the inning with a bases loaded triple to right center field.
The Pilots added 1 run in the third inning and 6 in the bottom of the fourth to give them a 14-0 lead which credited them with a victory at the completion of the fifth inning due to the NAIA 10 run mercy rule.
Daniel Welch picked up his second win of the year completing 5 innings of work while only allowing 3 hits, no walks, and collected 8 strikeouts. Bryan Cooksey finished 2-3 including a triple and 4 RBI which gave him 8 RBI in the double-header. Pilot freshman Thomas Looney was 2-2 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored.
The Pilots have now improved their season record to 23-13 and will look to improve upon that mark tomorrow when they travel to Monticello, Arkansas to take on the University of Arkansas-Monticello in double-header action beginning at 12:00pm.
