Pilots Take Hold of First Place in the GCAC
February 02, 2008
Shreveport, La. - The Pilots (20-1, 9-1) moved into sole possession of first place in the GCAC with an 81-61 win over the Rams.
LSUS scored the first basket of the game at the 18:36 mark on a lay-up by J’Quincy Jones, and the Pilots would never trail as they handed the Rams a 20-point loss.
The Pilots used a 10-2 run midway through the first half to take a 10 point lead, but Mobile responded with five unanswered point to cut the Pilot lead down to five. However, the Rams would never get any closer as Chris Gatlin came off the bench and pumped in back-to-back three pointers, and Josh Porter nailed two consecutive jumpers to increase the Pilots lead up to 14 points with just over one minute remaining in the first half.
After a made basket by Mobile’s Walter Fitzgerald to begin the second half, the Pilots essentially put the game away with a 10-0 run over the next five minutes of action.
The Pilots shot 48% from the field and outrebounded the Rams 47-30 on the glass.
Jones led all scorers with 19 points, while three other Pilots recorded double-doubles on the night. Josh Porter finished with 18 points and a career-high 11 rebounds, Travis Cash added 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Jamon Morris collected another double-double with 12 points and 10 boards.
Gatlin concluded the contest with a season-high 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc.
The Pilots defense held Mobile’s two leading scorers to just 16 points combined on 7-of-19 shooting. Robert Jones, who came into today’s contest averaging just over 21 PPG, finished with just 7 points, while Fitzgerald was held to 9 points.
LSUS will travel to Belhaven on Thursday for another contest with the Blazers. LSUS defeated Belhaven 91-74 earlier this season at The Dock.
