Pilots Sweep Saturday's Doubleheader Versus Loyola
March 15, 2008
Shreveport, La. – The LSUS Pilots baseball team picked up two win on Saturday afternoon at Pilot Field, as they swept the doubleheader versus Loyola University of New Orleans, 6-5 and 11-1.
LSUS (19-8, 13-5) struck first in game one on an RBI double off the bat of Andrew Brouillette, scoring Jeffrey Garidel from third.
After a scoreless second inning, Loyola answered with three runs in the top of the third on five hits to take a 3-2 lead. Brian Mason and Josh Borges each had RBI singles in the inning for the Wolfpack.
LSUS designated hitter Jeff Ledet cut the Wolfpack lead down to just one run with a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth, his fourth homerun of the season.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, the Pilots got back-to-back hits to put the tying and go-ahead runners on base. Pinch hitter Brandon Bravata then lined a single into left field, scoring both runners and putting the Pilots in front 4-3.
Fontenot doubled to lead off the top of the Wolfpack seventh, but was caught stealing after a wild pitch bounced off the backstop directly into catcher Bryan Stebbings’ glove, who threw a strike to third base for the first out of the inning. However, Stephen Carroll followed with a double of his own and scored on a game-tying RBI single by Mason.
Todd Hubbel then knocked a two-out single into right field to score Mason and give the Wolfpack a 5-4 advantage.
Pinch hitter Quenton Shamsabady led off the Pilot half of the seventh with a walk, and moved to third base after stealing second and a wild throw by the Wolfpack catcher. A sacrifice fly by Garidel scored Shamsabady to tie the game at 5-5.
Josh Todd reached first base after being hit by a pitch, and then two misplayed fly balls by the Wolfpack loaded the bases with just one out for the Pilots. Ledet ended the game with a walk-off walk on four straight pitches, as the Pilots took a 6-5 victory in game one.
Gino Spratley (3-1) picked up the win in relief for the Pilots.
In game two, Josh Borges hit a solo homerun in the second for the Wolfpack, but the Pilots responded with two runs of their own on back-to-back RBI doubles by Robert Pharr and Shamsabady.
The Pilots took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third on a RBI double by Ledet, scoring pinch runner Jacob Watkins.
A two-run homerun by Ricky Sanders in the Pilot half of the fourth and a solo shot by Brouillette in the fifth extended the Pilots lead to 6-1.
LSUS tacked on two more runs in the fifth and seventh and a single run in the eighth for an 11-1 victory in game two of Saturday’s sweep of the Wolfpack.
Pilot starter Justin Ennis (1-2) pitched a complete game for his first win of the season, scattering eight hits in the contest.
LSUS and Loyola will be back in action tomorrow afternoon for another doubleheader beginning at 1:00 PM at Pilot Field.
