Pilots sweep double header from Southwest
March 04, 2011
SHREVEPORT, La. - The no. 13 LSU Shreveport Pilots swept Friday's double header from the University of the Southwest Mustangs taking the first game by a final score of 6-3 and game two 6-4 at Pilot Field.
GAME 1, W 6-3
Southwest got on the board first with a two-run home run from Derrell Owens to take a 2-0 lead until the Pilots struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as Andrew Brouillette hit a high towering homer to left to trim the USW lead to 2-1 until the Pilots tied the game as Curtis Beaudoin's RBI-ground out plated Kevin Smith who had doubled earlier in the inning to tie the game at 2 after four complete innings of play.
LSUS scored four runs an inning later as the Mustangs intentionally walked Brouillette to get to Smith and he made them pay with a three-run triple and he later scored on a sacrifice fly from Cody Causey to take a 6-2 lead heading to the sixth inning where Southwest got an RBI-single from Ysidoro Reyna to trim the Pilot lead to 6-3 but that is where it would stay in one of the quickest games that lasted only one hour and forty minutes.
Cole Newell (1-2) picked up the win in relief for the Pilots after two and 2/3 allowing only one earned run and striking out one. Ben Suit started and went four and 1/3 allowing just two earned runs and striking out four but got a no decision. USW starter Andrew Henning (3-1) took the loss after allowing six runs in four and 1/3.
GAME, W 6-4
Southwest scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning after Alfredo Guevara's ground out brought in Omar Villar from third. The Pilots scored on an RBI-single from Andrew Brouillette to tie the game at one in the bottom of the third.
Manny Estrada's three-run triple in the fourth gave the Pilots their largest lead of the day, 5-1, after four complete innings of play. Southwest scored one run in the fifth as Nathan Paz drove in a run with a single and Guevara knocked in a run in the sixth. Gary Valenzuela's solo homer to right field in the seventh trimmed the Pilot lead down to one, 5-4 after seven.
Justin Brodnax singled home Chase Wentz in the bottom of the eighth for an insurance run. Southwest put the tying on the bases in the top of the ninth but Shawn Moy made a great catch in foul territory to end the threat and win the game for the Pilots.
LSUS starter Jared Mortensen (2-0) picked up the win after allowing three runs, walking three, and striking out five in five and 1/3 innings pitched. Jacob Kight was the bridge to the closer as he tossed an inning and 2/3 striking out two batters in the process and allowing one run. Cade Bowen (2) picked up the save for the Pilots after striking out three batters in two innings pitched.
The same two teams will be in action tomorrow at Pilot Field for one nine-inning game that is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
