Pilots streak continues with 21-4 win over Texas College
March 03, 2004
The LSUS Pilots (11-3) started the year with a 5-3 record but have recently kicked it into high gear as they have won their last six games, including today’s 21-4 victory over the Texas College Steers (2-7).
Texas College threatened in the first as they managed to get the lead off man aboard off Pilot freshman pitcher Wesley Cromer (1-0). Cromer then settled in and worked out of trouble in the first and went on to finish five innings of work, only giving up 1 earned run on 5 hits while collecting 5 strikeouts to pick up his first career college victory.
After being blanked in the first inning, the Pilots offense erupted for 5 runs in the bottom of the second. Cody Samford capped off the inning with a 2 RBI single; his second hit of the game. The Pilots continued to have their way with the Steers pitching staff as they scored a season high 21 runs on 17 hits in the 8 inning victory. Samford finished the game going 4-6 with 2 doubles and an 8th inning grand-slam to give him 7 RBI on the day. Pilots catcher Kyle Mace was 3-4 with 2 doubles on the afternoon. Jeffery Ledet returned to the Pilots line-up after suffering a partial shoulder separation early in the season and pitched in with a 2-2 performance including his first career college homerun. Ledet is a freshman infielder who is now hitting .545 on the year for the Pilots. Russel Cox collected his first hit of the year when he homered over the left-center field fence in LSUS’ 8 run 8th inning.
LSUS will now look ahead to this weekends Gulf Coast Athletic Conference series versus the William Carey College Crusaders in Hattiesburg, MS. The Pilots are currently tied with the Crusaders for first place in the GCAC, each team sporting 5-1 conference records. Game one is scheduled to begin Friday at 6:00pm. Games two and three will be played Saturday in form of a double-header beginning at 1:00pm.
