Pilots squeak by Texas College
October 13, 2011TYLER, Tex. - The LSU Shreveport Pilots soccer team won a 2-1 nail-bitter over the Texas College Steers on Thursday afternoon in Red River Athletic Conference play. LSUS' keeper, Lance Quini, made a diving save with one minute to play to keep the Pilots on top and eventually give his team the win.
LSUS (5-7, 4-3 RRAC) had plenty of chances to score during the first few minutes of the first half but could not convert while Texas College (1-11, 1-6RRAC) got the first goal during the first minute of the contest from Juan Montes to put the Steers ahead 1-0.
The Pilots answered 28 minutes later as Joey Morvant hustled around a TC defender to shoot a rocket over the head of the TC keeper for his third goal of the season and tie the game at one. Both teams took a total of seven shots in the first half of play as they played to a 1-1 at the break.
The second half of play was evenly contested as each team made runs where they dominated parts of the half but it was the Pilots coming through to get the game-winning goal during the 82nd minute from Eduardo Hernandez, his first goal of his LSUS career.
The Pilots were able to hold off the Steers in a half where TC outshot the Pilots 10-7 thanks to some superb goaltending from Quini. He played all 90 minutes and made six saves while only allowing the one goal for the Pilots while Alexis Garcia came up on the losing end for TC with five saves and two goals allowed in 90 minutes of action.
Texas College outshot the Pilots 17-14 as each team had seven shots on goal.
