Pilots split double-header with Northwood
March 10, 2004
The LSUS Pilots (12-7, 5-4) hosted the Northwood University Knights of Dallas, TX Wednesday night in double-header action. In game one LSUS sent Jeremie Chabot (1-1) to the mound looking for his first win of the season. Chabot settled in early as he held the Knights scoreless in his first two innings of work. Northwood chipped away and managed single runs in the 3rd and 4th innings. Chabot’s day was finished when LSUS brought in junior pitcher Sam Alphonse (1-2) to begin the fifth. Alphonse cruised through the Northwood line-up retiring 9 of the 10 batters he faced. Chabot collected his first win of the year in the 4-2 Pilot victory, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits in four innings while Amador suffered the loss for the Knights.
Dustin Bissonnett continued to cross the plate for the Pilots as he scored 2 runs without registering a hit in the game. Pilot senior Wesley Gray pitched in with a 2-4 effort while Chris Frye and Brian Cooksey were each 1-3 with a run scored for the Pilots.
In game two Pilot senior pitcher Levi Montoya was perfect through 4 2/3 innings before giving up a flare over shortstop Dustin Bissonnett to ruin his bid at a no-hitter. The Pilots led 3-0 entering the top of the sixth before the wheels fell off for the Pilots pitching staff. A hit batter followed by a walk, and a Northwood single started a 6 run sixth inning for the Knights. Northwood plated 6 runners in the inning on 4 hits, 3 walks, and a costly pick-off attempt at third base that ended up in left field to score 2 runners for the Knights. The Knights tacked on two more runs in the top of the 7th inning off sophomore pitcher Tyler Lewis (0-2) who suffered the loss in the 8-5 Knight victory.
Pilot freshman Troy Vaughan was 2-4 in the game including a homerun over the left field fence, his first of his college career. Freshman teammate Brian Cooksey boosted his .341 average with a 2-3 performance and also scored his team high 14th and 15th runs of the season.
LSUS is now idle until Friday night when they will host Loyola University of New Orleans in a three game Gulf Coast Athletic Conference series. Game one is scheduled to begin at 6:30pm at Pilot Field. Games two and three will be played in the form of a double-header Saturday with game one scheduled for 1:00pm.
