Pilots split double-header versus Vikings

February 13, 2005

Shreveport, LA---The LSUS Pilots (4-2) returned home to Pilot Field Sunday afternoon for a double header versus the Missouri Valley College Vikings. The Pilots took game one by a final score of 2-1, but fell victim to an 8 run outburst in the top of the fourth inning in game 2 which led the Vikings to a 12-4 victory.

The Vikings struck first in game one when Kelly Callanan drew a lead off walk from Pilots starting pitcher David Alexander, and later scored in the inning when Andrew Lafavre hit a double into deep right-center field. Brandon Magierowski relayed the Callanan double to home to stop Jerome Woods from scoring from first on the play to end the Vikings rally.

Dustin Bissonnette drew a lead off walk from Vikings starter Bruce Galloway in the Pilots half of the third. Bissonnette advanced to second on a wild pitch and then stole third base which allowed him to score on a Patrick Thompson infield single with two outs.

A lead off single by Gabe Riley followed by with Jake Wheeler being hit by an Alexander fastball had the Vikings threatening again in the fourth. The Pilots defense however had the answer as Alexander charged after a Greg Flemming bunt attempt and threw to third base for a force out, keeping the Vikings base runners at first and second. Alexander then picked off Wheeler at second base and got Brian Brown to ground out to second base for the third out.

A lead off triple off the left-center field fence by Riley Cook who would later score on a Bissonnette sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 5th proved to be the winning run as Kevin Jewell (2-0) came on in relief of Alexander and tossed a scoreless 5th, 6th, and 7th inning. Alexander completed 4.0 innings allowing three hits and one earned while collecting two strikeouts.

Galloway (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing two earned runs on six hits and four walks in 6 complete innings of work. Lafavre led the Vikings offense with a 2-2 performance at the plate with the Vikings lone RBI.

Bissonnette led the Pilots offense going 1-1 with a run scored, one RBI, and a stolen base in the victory. Steffean Primeaux and Magierowski finished 2-3 at the plate, each collecting a single and a double.

Tyler Lewis (0-1) took the hill for the Pilots in game two of the double-header. Lewis pitched two scoreless innings to begin the game and collected two quick outs in the top of the third before hitting Riley with a 1-0 fastball offering. Vikings starting pitcher Lafavre then connected on a 2-0 fastball and drove it over the right field fence to put the Vikings up 2-0.

Bissonnette was hit by a Lafavre offering with one out in the bottom of the third which started a three run ralley, capped off by a Colin Moro RBI single to left field to give the Pilots a 3-2 lead heading to the 4th.

The Vikings collected one run in the fourth and took advantage of a struggling Pilot pitching staff who surrendered eight runs on three hits and  five walks in the top of the 5th to put the Vikings up 11-3, and out of reach for the Pilots.

Lafavre, Riley, Wheeler, and Brown all homered for the Vikings, leading them to a 12-4 victory over the Pilots. Riley finished 1-3 with 4 RBI and two runs scored and Brown was 3-3 with 3 runs scored for the Vikings. Lafavre (1-0) completed 5.0 innings allowing 3 runs on 8 hits and struck out four Pilot hitters.

Lewis completed 4.1 innings allowing 7 runs, 7 hits, 4 walks, and collecting 6 strikeouts. Dusty Maddox was 2-4 with a triple and Kyle Mace was 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI for the Pilots.

The Pilots (4-2) will be in action again Wednesday afternoon when they will travel to Dallas, TX to take on Paul Quinn University in double-header action. LSUS will return home Friday night when they will play host to the Belhaven College Blazers in their Gulf Coast Athletic Conference opener. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30pm.
