Pilots shutout Warriors in home opener
February 09, 2005
Shreveport, LA---LSUS baseball returned to the field for the first time in the 2005 season Wednesday night at Pilot Field to take on the Bacone College Warriors (1-2) of Oklahoma. The Pilots received some timely hitting and their pitching staff collected their first shutout of the season as they went on to win 4-0.
Pilots starting pitcher David Alexander (1-0), finished a perfect top half of the first and the Pilots struck early as Dusty Maddox led off the bottom of the inning with a line drive single off up the middle off the Warriors starting pitcher Ryan Murphy (1-1). Maddox promptly stole second on the next pitch, and later scored from second base on a pitch that got away from the Warriors catcher Mike Jennet.
The Pilots struck again in their half of the fourth when Brian Cooksey delivered a 2 out bases loaded single through the left side of the infield scoring Steffan Primeaux and Colin Moro. Maddox followed with a line drive which hit Pilots baserunner Riley Cook who was attempting to steal third on the play which ended the Pilots chances of a big inning.
The Warriors threatened to score in the 5th inning with runners on first and third with one out, but a line drive by Arterberry was caught by Bissonnette who then threw to first to double off Walker to end the inning. Bissonnette led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single and eventually scored on a ground ball to the shortstop by Primeaux for their fourth run of the game.
Alexander completed 5 innings and collected 4 strikeouts while only allowing 3 Warrior hits before handing the ball to teammate Tyler Lewis. Lewis allowed 2 hits in his 2 innings of work and Pilot senior Derreck Cunningham, a transfer from Arkansas State University, closed the door on the Warriors collecting 3 strikeouts in two innings out of the pen.
The Warriors collected 7 hits but stranded 7 base runners in the game. Aldrete and Murphy each collected two hits for the Warriors. Murphy pitched 7 innings and surrendered 4 runs on 7 hits, 2 walks, 2 hit batsmen, and collected 7 strikeouts.
Maddox finished 2-3 with 2 stolen bases and a run scored pacing the Pilots offense. Chris Frye and Bissonnette each collected 2 hits and shortstop Brian Cooksey was 1-4 with 2 RBI.
The Pilots will square off against the Warriors again tomorrow afternoon at 3:00pm in Alexandria, LA.
