Pilots romp Rams 10-0 in seven innings

April 27, 2007

Shreveport, LA---The combination of timely hitting, stingy defense, and a dominant pitching performance by Matt Clayman (9-0) was the recipe for a 10-0 LSUS Pilots (35-12, 20-8 GCAC) victory Friday night over the University of Mobile Rams (24-29, 14-14 GCAC).

Pilots shortstop Brandon Magierowski collected his first of three hits on the night in the bottom of the 2nd inning with a single to left field. Rams starting pitcher Ross Black (6-7) followed by hitting Bryan Stebbings, and then allowed an infield bunt single to Andrew Blubaugh. Rams first baseman Daniel Harper missed the rushed throw attempt which allowed Magierowski and Stebbings to score on the play.

The Pilots added another run in the inning after Chris Frye belted a bases loaded sacrifice fly to center which scored Blubaugh from third to extend the lead to 3-0.

LSUS took advantage of two Rams errors and back-to-back singles by Scott Talley and Magierowski in the bottom of the 3rd inning by scoring three runs to stretch their lead to 6-0.

Clayman remained perfect through three innings but allowed an infield single to Rams leadoff hitter Milton Roque to begin the 4th. With his first pitch out of the stretch Clayman hit Jared Baria, but escaped the inning without any further damage after Roque was thrown out at third base, Brett Barber flew out to center field, and Carlos Romero went down swinging to end the inning.

Pilots senior center fielder Chris Frye doubled to left in the 4th and later scored on an RBI single from Talley. Frye added an RBI triple in the 5th which scored Moro from first base, and scored on an RBI fielders choice from catcher Brent Lavallee stretching the Pilots lead to 9-0.

Paul Marlow came on in relief of Clayman in the 7th and managed to hold the Rams to just one hit in the inning.

In the bottom half of the 7th, Magierowski singled to center and advanced to second base one pitch later on a ball in the dirt. David McGhee then followed with an RBI single to right field giving the Pilots a 10-0 lead, enforcing the 10-run mercy rule to come into effect.

Ross suffered the loss after allowing nine runs on 11 hits while walking three and striking out four. Zack Mann was the lone Rams hitter to collect two hits on the night which included a double to left field in the 7th inning.

With the victory the Pilots remained undefeated on Friday night’s this season. Clayman improved to 9-0 on the year after completing six scoreless innings which lowered his ERA to 2.62. He allowed five hits and issued just one walk while striking out three.

Magierowski lifted his team leading batting average to .364 with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate and scored three runs. Moro, Frye and Talley each added two hits a piece.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon at Pilots Field in double-header action which will conclude the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular season. Game one is scheduled for 1:00pm.
