By Scott Ferrell sferrell@gannett.com For the second time in as many days, the LSUS Pilots defeated the William Carey Crusaders in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. And, for the second time in as many days, Dusty Maddox had a big hit to key an offensive uprising for the Pilots. Maddox finished with three RBIs while teammates Riley Cook and Dustin Bissonnette each had three hits as the Pilots pounded out 12 hits. LSUS will play Belhaven College at 1 p.m. today in the championship game. The Blazers must defeat the PIiots twice to claim the title. "Obviously our offense came through tonight, but I am going to keep preaching about our pitching and defense," LSUS coach Rocke Musgraves said. "If you can hold a team like William Carey to eight runs over two days, that's excellent. I think the main thing has been our pitchers' ability to throw two or three pitches for strikes. Our pitching has been excellent." Belhaven advanced to the championship by rallying to defeat Mobile 8-6 earlier Friday. The Pilots' second big inning in as many days came at a key time as the Crusaders had cut the LSUS lead from 6-0 to 6-5 with a three-run seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh, the Pilots answered back with their offensive barrage. Seven of LSUS' runs came before the Crusaders recorded an out, helping make a winner of right-hander J.V. Lafitte, who allowed five runs (three earned) in 6 2-3 innings. |
