February 13, 2006
Shreveport, LA---The No. 14 LSUS Pilots responded from an 8-5 loss at the hands of the No. 8 Spalding University Pelicans last Thursday in game one of their four game series by sweeping the next three games, including a double-header Sunday afternoon, by outscoring the Pelicans by a 33-5 margin.
In game one Sunday the Pilots scored six runs in the bottom in the bottom of the second inning off Pelican starter B.J. Stivers. Junior third baseman Bryan Cooksey delivered a triple to deep right center field with the bases loaded which put this one out of reach for the Pelicans.
The Pilots added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when center fielder Tyler Williams belted a 1-1 pitch over the right field wall for his first homerun of the season making the score 10-1.
The Pelicans would add three runs in the top of the fifth inning, however the Pilots responded with two runs of their own in their half of the fifth after Cooksey delivered an RBI double to left center field which was followed by an RBI double by Williams making the score 12-4.
Pilots starting pitcher Marcus Calhoun (1-0) received credit for the win after allowing three runs on just two hits over 4.0 innings of work.
Cooksey and Williams finished a combined 5-5 at the plate with eight RBI and five runs scored. Steffan Primeaux added two hits including a double and a triple driving in two runs and scoring twice. Right fielder Colin Moro also collected two hits with a 2-3 performance.
Game two provided much of the same as the Pilots jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning courtesy of a three-run homerun off the bat of Jacob Watkins.
LSUS added five more runs in the bottom of the third inning which was highlighted by a bases loaded two out single by catcher Quenton Shamsabody giving the Pilots a 9-0 lead.
Williams capped off a perfect 6-6 performance at the plate with his second homerun of the day off Pelican reliever Brandon Farmer in the bottom of the fourth stretching the Pilot lead to 11-0.
The Pelicans would add a solo run in the top of the sixth inning off reliever Blake Pinkston but that would be all as the Pilots went on to win by a final score of 11-1.
J.V. Lafitte (1-0) completed 3.0 innings of work allowing just two hits while scattering four walks for his first win the season.
Williams finished 3-3 which included a homerun, three RBI and three runs scored while Cooksey was 2-3 with two doubles and two runs scored. Watkins added a 3-4 performance with a three-run homerun, a double, four RBI, and two runs scored.
The Pilots have now improved to 5-3 on the year and will be off until Saturday afternoon when they will play host to the Paul Quinn College Tigers at Pilot Field in double-header action. Game one is scheduled for 1:00pm.
