Pilots pound Bacone College
October 13, 2012
SHREVEPORT, La. - Rodrigo Pontes had a hat trick for the LSU Shreveport Pilots men's soccer team in a 5-1 pounding of the Bacone Warriors on Saturday afternoon at The Swamp in Red River Athletic Conference play. Pontes led the way for the Pilots with three goals and one assist.
LSUS (9-4-1, 5-2-1 RRAC) dominated from start to finish as they blasted 29 shots to their opponents' six as they placed a dozen on goal. The Pilots constantly put pressure on the Bacone net minder as Hank Hill made a total of seven saves.
Bacone (2-12, 2-6 RRAC) struggled to gain any momentum as the Pilots defense stood tall and did not allow too many opportunities as the Warriors only placed three shots on goal with the LSUS' keeper Lance Quini making a pair of saves.
The Warriors made it a one-goal game as they converted on a penalty kick by Greg Cawley just as the second half underway for a 2-1 LSUS' lead. The LSUS' senior captain Brian McKay added some insurance as he finished the pass from Pontes.
Pontes netted the next two goals for the Pilots during the 76th and 79th minute with assists going to Alan Arroyo and Benito Garcia.
The Pilots found momentum in the first half as they pounded the Warriors in total shots 14-3 as they built a 2-0 lead at the half. Nelson Zelaya netted the first goal of the game for the home team just minutes after checking into the contest. He blasted a low one under the wall on a free kick after a foul was called against Bacone to set up the score. The Bacone keeper who made some great saves in the first half couldn't get it as he was expecting one in the air.
LSUS quickly added another goal but the goal was negated as the Pilots were called offsides. Moments later Alex Curry checked in for the Pilots and made an immediate impact as he found Rodrigo Pontes for the second goal of the game during the 38th minute.
The Pilots will take on Southwestern Christian on Tuesday afternoon at The Swamp at 3 p.m. The Pilots have three remaining home games left in the regular season with the last two coming on Thursday vs UT-Brownsville (1 p.m.) and Saturday vs. Our Lady of the Lake at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
