Pilots Open up GCAC Play With a 67-62 Victory

New Orleans, La.- Loyola’s upset bid against #5 LSU-Shreveport fell just short as the Pilots defeated the Wolfpack 67-62 in the GCAC opener for both teams Thursday night in The Den.
Josh Porter led all scorers with 25 points on 9 of 18 shooting from the field and 2 of 7 from behind the arc. Jamon Morris finished with 12 points to round out the leaders for the Pilots, who remained unbeaten at 12-0 overall and 1-0 in the GCAC.
For Loyola (7-4, 0-1 GCAC), Sean Bennett led with 20 points and shot 6 of 11 from the field and 3 of 6 from beyond the arc. The sophomore guard converted 5 of 6 from the free throw line.
Luke Zumo had 13 points on 6 of 13 from the field and Nick Tuszynski finished with 10 points to round out the leaders for the Wolfpack.
Loyola led by as many as five points in the contest when Bennett hit a jumper with 7:39 remaining in the first half to make the score 24-19 . The Pilots answered with a 14-1 run to close out the half as the teams went to the locker room with LSUS leading 33-25.
In the second half, LSU-Shreveport increased the advantage to as many as 13 points with 9:38 to play as Porter hit a lay-up with 9:38 remaining.
Loyola cut the lead to one point with 2:59 to play on steal and layup by Bennett. LSUS finished the game with an 8-4 run, converting 6 of 8 from the free throw line over the last two minutes, to pull away en route to the win.
LSUS (12-0, 1-0) will return to action on Saturday evening when they face Southern-New Orleans. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM at Delgado Community College.
