Pilots Lose 86-83 at the Buzzer

November 24, 2003

Chad McDowell and his LSUS Pilots went to East Texas Baptist University looking for their first two game win streak of the season Monday night. Going into halftime the Pilots were looking good against the ETBU Tigers with a four point lead and the momentum from a 10-4 point run to end the first half.

The second half looked as if LSUS was ready to put the ETBU Tigers away as they built an 11 point lead with ten minutes remaining in regulation time. The Tigers and their home court advantage however fought back and managed to regain the lead at the two minute mark. Both teams traded field goals and missed some timely free throws and found themselves knotted up at 83-83 with 50 seconds left on the game clock.

After only going 5-14 in the game from the free throw line, Tigers Chris Isom hit back-to-back free throws with only four seconds remaining to put ETBU up by three. The Pilots managed to get the ball down the court to get a wide open look from the three point line to tie the game but found the back of the iron at the buzzer.

Derrick Sowell finished with 27 points and 10 rebounds, collecting his first double-double of the year. Brandon Malveaux also stepped up for the Pilots with a season high 10 points and 8 rebounds. LSUS is now 3-3 on the season and will have their hands full tomorrow night when they head to Natchitoches to take on the Northwestern Demons. Tip-off begins at 7:30.
