Pilots improve to 4-0 in conference with road wins over SUNO and Xavier

Shreveport, LA---The LSUS Pilots traveled to New Orleans Thursday afternoon on what could arguably have been their toughest road trip of the season. The Pilots squared off against the 2003-2004 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Champion Southern University of New Orleans Knights (SUNO) Saturday night at the Castle. The Pilots were looking to avenge a conference tournament loss at the hands in of the Knights in 2003-2004, and to stay undefeated in conference play.
SUNO jumped out to an 11 point lead at halftime and found themselves ahead by as many as 17 in the second half. “Let’s go! This game is not over,” yelled Pilots senior point guard Justin Collins to his teammates during an LSUS time-out with 12:00 minutes remaining. Collins then led the Pilots to their biggest comeback win of the year by a final score of 91-82. Collins finished with a game high 23 points, followed by teammate Fredericko Payne with 19.
The Pilots then had to jump back into the fire Monday night when they took on the Xavier University Gold Rush in front of a capacity crowd at the Barn. LSUS entered Monday night’s game already having defeated the Gold Rush 87-75 in their conference opener at the Dock December 14th.
Fredericko Payne dominated the Goldrush defenders collecting 38 points on 14-24 shooting and led the Pilots to an 89-65 victory. Derrick Rogers and Justin Collins each pitched in with 15 points a piece.
The Pilots are now 13-5 overall and stand alone on top of the GCAC at 4-0. LSUS will be back on the road this Thursday when they will travel to Jackson, MS to take on Tougaloo College (5-6, 1-2), before returning home to the Dock to take on the University of Mobile Rams (14-3, 3-0) Saturday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00pm.
