Pilots Hold On for Two-Point Victory

February 08, 2008

Jackson, Miss. -  The LSUS men's basketball team picked up their 21st win of the season, as they held on to defeat the Belhaven Blazers 89-87 on Thursday night.

A last-second three-point attempt by Belhaven's Julien Marion bounced off the back of the rim, and Jared Stevenson pulled down the rebound to seal the Pilots victory.

LSUS led by seven points with just under one minute remaining, but three consecutive turnovers and two missed free throws gave the Blazers one last shot to upset the No. 4 Pilots.

Josh Porter finished with a game-high 23 points, while Jamon Morris ended the night with 21 on 10-of-12 shooting.  J'Quincy Jones rounded out the Pilots in double figures with 16 points and 8 rebounds.

With Morris saddled with four fouls for most of the second half, senior Paul Marlow stepped in and provided the Pilots with a much needed spark from off the bench.

Marlow helped turn a six-point Pilots deficit into a seven-point Pilots lead with several hustle plays.  During his nine minutes of action, Marlow pulled down six rebounds, blocked 2 shots and altered several other Blazer shot attempts, while finishing 1-for-1 from the field.

With the win, LSUS maintains sole possession of first place in the GCAC standings.  The Pilots will host the Loyola Wolfpack on Saturday afternoon at The Dock, as they look for their 22nd win of the season.  Game time is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
