Pilots handle Southwest

HOBBS, N. M. - Greg Shyne and Derrick Parker combined for 54 of the Pilots' points on Saturday night leading their team to an 87-71 win over the Southwest Mustangs on Saturday night. The win stretches the LSUS Pilots' winning streak to 10 games in a span where they have won 14 of their last 15.Shyne led all scorers finishing with 30 points as his 17-point first half performance led the Pilots to a seven-point lead at the half with the Pilots shooting 53% from the field. Shyne finished the game 11 for 17 from the field, three of four from beyond the arc and five of six from the charity stripe.
Parker turned in his 17th double-double of the season with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Parker dominated underneath making 10 of 16 from the field and four of six attempts from the free-throw line. Cody Walker was the final shooter in double digits for the Pilots as he finished with 10 points after a perfect two of two performance from downtown and four of five from the field.
LSUS (18-6, 16-3) shot an incredible 77% from the three-point line making seven out of nine attempts to help them finished at 64% from the field for the game while Southwest (8-16, 5-15 RRAC) shot 44% overall and only 29% from beyond the arc making seven of 24.
Parker's 11 rebounds led all rebounders as his Pilots gathered a total of 37 compared to the Mustangs 26 boards. Southwest had four scorers in double figures: Demetrius Evans had 14 points, Hector Aguilar had 12, Ullyses Robinson 11 and Michael Darden 10.
LSUS took the lead for good when Shyne made a pair of free-throws with 14:15 to play in the first half that started a 7-0 run for the Pilots that was capped off by a Shyne rainmaker from downtown to extend the LSUS' lead to 22-14 with 12:20 to go in the half.
The Pilots look to extend their winning streak again on Wednesday night against St. Thomas at The Dock with the tip-off coming at 7 p.m. as the Pilots celebrate homecoming 2012. LSUS won their earlier meeting this year 69-65 in Houston.
