Pilots finish regular season with 20th victory
March 01, 2004
The LSUS Pilots traveled this past Saturday to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, in hopes of getting their 20th win during regular season play. They accomplished their goal by defeating William Carey College by the score of 98-81. It was senior night for William Carey College this past Saturday and that attracted an unusual audience for both participating teams. Their were two men in the gym from Sports Illustrated doing a feature on Jaeson Maravich, son of the late "Pistol" Pete Maravich. Although Jaeson got off to a great start, it was our very own LSUS Pilots that put on a show from the beginning tip to the final buzzer. The Pilots raced out to a commanding 18 point lead with 10 minutes remaining in the half. The Crusaders managed to cut the lead to 11 right before halftime. They continued to cut into the lead during the second half getting as close as 4 points on two different occasions. However, the Pilots were too much to handle as they continued to cause turnovers which led to easy transition buckets. Derrick Rogers led the Pilots in scoring with 26 points. Rico Payne and Justin Collins had 19 points each with Travis Cash scoring 13 and Derrick Sowell 11. The Pilots finished one game back of first place in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference and received the fourth seed in the Conference tournament. They will play Dillard on Thursday, March 11, 2004, at the Alario Center located in New Orleans.
