Pilots fall in season opener

SHAWNEE, Okla.  - The no. 6 LSU Shreveport Pilots basketball team lost the first game of the season by a final score of 79-75 against St. Gregory's University Cavaliers on Friday night at the W.P. Wood Fieldhouse.

LSUS (0-1) led 42-41 at the half after shooting 57% (15-26) from the field while St. Gregory's shot 50% (16-32). The Pilots went four of nine from downtown in the first half to earn the edge at halftime while the home team was two for eight.

The Pilots was just one of five from long range in the second half. St. Gregory's (1-0) didn't light it up from downtown in the second half either as the made just one of eight but the difference maker was the 11 of 14 free throws that they made while the Pilots was just six of 11 from the charity stripe and was 14 of 24 for the game.

LSUS' Derrick Parker led all scorers with 29 points after a 12 of 16 performance from the field in 33 minutes of action. Greg Shyne (19) and Isiah Bazile (10) were the only two other Pilots to top the double digit mark. Shyne nailed a pair of three-pointers and was three of four from the line while Bazile was four of nine from the field.

Jeremy Malone led the Pilots with nine rebounds while Parker finished the game with eight.

Fayzon Richey led the Cavaliers with 26 points while Ron Waller (15) and Pud Ross (11) also reached double figures for the home team. Richey led the Cavs with nine rebounds.

The Pilots will look to rebound tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. against the University of Science and Arts who comes off a 69-66 loss to the SAGU Lions on Friday at the W.P. Wood Fieldhouse.
