Pilots Earn Road Victory Over William Carey

January 16, 2009

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - LSUS junior Mike Pilgrim provided the Pilots offense with the spark they needed on Thursday night, scoring a game-high 23 points from off the bench in a 65-61 victory over William Carey.

LSUS had trouble scoring and shooting the basketball for most of the night, but a 9-for-12 performance from the field by Pilgrim helped offset a tough shooting night overall for the Pilots.

The Pilots offense managed just 25 points in the first half, but their defense essentially kept them in the game by holding the Crusaders to just 27 points over the first 20 minutes.

In the second half, the Pilots found themselves down five points midway through, but back-to-back Pilgrim dunks cut the Carey lead to just one.  The teams battled back-and-forth for the next six minutes, until a Chris Gatlin three-point basket from the corner gave the Pilots a one-point lead.

LSUS used nothing but free throws down the stretch to extend their lead and eventually hold on for the four-point road win.

Tyrone Hamilton finished with 13 points and a game-high 6 assists in the win, while Gatlin added 11 points to finish in double figures.

LSUS (10-5, 3-0) has now won 9 out of their last 11 games, and they will take on Belhaven College on Saturday night at The Dock.
