March 25, 2011

SHREVPEPORT, La. - The no. 13 LSU Shreveport Pilots baseball team dominated on Friday afternoon at Pilot Field as they won both games of the double header by the ten-run rule over the Huston-Tillotson Rams. The Pilots won game one 14-4 in 6 innings and game two 18-1 in 7 innings.

Game 1, W 14-4

The Pilots scored early and often in the first game as they led 8-0 after two innings. Chase Wentz hit an inside-the-park homer as he pounded a line drive through the right-center field gap to clear the bases for the three-run homer to give the Pilots the early lead. The home team pounded the gaps again in the second inning scoring five runs with four of their five hits in the inning going for extra bases. Shawn Moy drove in a pair with a double, Kevin Smith drove in one with a triple, Justin Brodnax drove in one with a double, and Curtis Beaudoin brought in one with a two-bagger.

LSUS got five more in the third inning on four hits. Beaudoin drove in two with a single, Kyle Pearson had an RBI-single, and Moy drove in two with a double. The Pilots led 13-0 after three complete innings.

HTU got on the board with two runs in the fifth and sixth inning to extend the game to beyond the fifth inning. Bryan Castillo's two-run single extended the game and kept the Pilots from ending it after five. But Moy would lead off the bottom of the sixth with a solo-homer for the 14th run of the game.

Jared Mata (5-2) picked up the win for the Pilots as he went the distance walking none and striking out three in six innings of work. He allowed three earned runs and scattered eight hits. Anthony Luna (3-2) took the loss for HTU as he allowed 13 earned runs and 12 hits in three innings of labor.

Moy was three for four with five RBIs, Smith was two for two with a RBI, Wentz was two for three with three RBIs, and Beaudoin was three for three with three RBIs.

GAME 2, W 18-1

The Pilots pulled away quickly from HTU in the second game as well with five runs in the first, one in the second and six in the third for a 12-0 lead after three complete innings of play. Wentz drove in three with a triple, Beaudoin single home one and Brodnax brought a runner home with a triple in the first inning.

Cody Causey single in the lone run in the second while Manny Estrada (1B), Moy (Sac Fly), Smith (1B), and Causey (3B) all drove in one in the third. Wentz hit a mammoth homer over the left field wall to bring in two.

LSUS added four in the fourth inning with Allen Degges (Sac Fly) and Estrada (1B) each driving in one while Moy hit his second homer of the day, a two run shot to extend the lead to 16-0 after four. Two more came across in the fifth to end the scoring frenzy as Estrada drove them both in with a single to left field.

Estrada was three for four with four RBIs and scored three runs while Causey was two for three with two RBIs and two runs scored. Wentz drove in five and was two for five at the plate.

Jared Mortensen (4-0) was lights out on the mound for the Pilots as he tossed six strong innings and did not give up the first hit until the fourth inning. He allowed a total of three hits, one earned run, walked only two, and struck out seven including the first three batters of the game. Austin Cook (2-5) was roughed up by the Pilot offense for 11 earned runs in three innings off nine hits. He struck out none and walked four.
