Pilots downed by SAU

SHREVEPORT, La. - The no. 13 LSU Shreveport Pilots lost to the Muleriders of Southern Arkansas University by a final score of 17-6 on Tuesday afternoon at Pilot Field. Both pitching staffs showed that the season is still young as the game had a total of 17 walks between the two staffs.

LSUS (3-5) scored two runs in the third inning only to be answered by SAU (1-0) with three runs in the top of the fourth. The Pilots added three runs of their own in the to take a 5-3 lead after four complete innings of play only to have the wheels fall off the wagon in the top half of the fifth inning.

The LSUS pitching staff walked four, allowed five hits and the defense made three errors as SAU tagged the Pilots for a nine-run fifth. The Pilots never recovered but SAU added five more in the eighth to secure the win.

Brandon Choate had the game high four RBIs as he went two for four with a home run in the top of the fourth inning. Trey Buck blasted a three-run shot for SAU in the five-run eighth to put the Pilots down by 11. Andrew Brouillette drove in a pair after a 0-1 night at the plate while Chase Wentz was the only one with multi-hits for the Pilots as he finished the game two for five.

SAU starter Kyle Felts (1-0) picked up the win while LSUS starter Cole Newell (0-2) suffered the loss.

The next game for the Pilots will be on Friday afternoon at Pilot Field as they take on no. 7 Oklahoma City University at 12:30 p.m. OCU will play no. 12 Belhaven University following the Pilots game with OCU at 4:00 p.m. The Pilots will play the regularly scheduled double-header with Belhaven beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
