Pilots defeat Reddies 7-3

Shreveport, LA---Dusty Maddox provided the offense with a 2-2 performance that included a three-run homerun, and Daniel Welch provided the pitching going eight strong innings allowing just one run as the No. 13 LSUS Pilots disposed of NCAA Division II opponent Henderson State University Reddies Wednesday night 7-3 at Pilot Field.
Dustin Bissonnette led off the bottom of the 1st inning with his 10th double of the season, and after being moved to 3rd base on a sacrifice bunt by Dusty Maddox, scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Tyler Williams for the first run of the ball game.
The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Pilots until the bottom of the 3rd inning when Maddox delivered his 4th homerun of the season over the left field wall off Reddies starter Blake Diehl, giving the Pilots a 4-0 lead.
The Reddies managed their lone run off Welch in the top of the 4th after Alex Apolinar doubled deep down the left field line and later scored on an RBI single through the left side of the infield by Jose Carmona cutting the Pilot lead to 4-1.
LSUS added two more runs in the bottom of the 5th inning after Steffan Primeaux singled to left field with the bases loaded which scored Bryan Cooksey and Maddox which stretched the Pilot lead to 6-1.
Welch gave way to Pilot reliever Chris Marks after completing a scoreless 8th inning. Welch scattered six hits and just one walk while striking out five to improve to 3-0 on the year.
The Reddies capitalized on two Pilot errors in the top of the 9th and scored two runs, cutting the lead to 7-3. However, it was too little too late as Marks closed the door on the late Reddies rally as the Pilots held on to the 7-3 lead and improved to 26-12 on the season.
The Pilots one through four hitters provided eight of the Pilots nine hits and drove in all seven Pilot runs in the victory. Maddox led the way with a 2-2 effort which included three RBI and two runs scored. Bissonnette, Williams and Primeaux each added two hits and combined for four RBI and three runs scored.
The Pilots will return to action again Friday night when the will play host to the Loyola University Wolfpack in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action. The three game series will begin Friday night with game one scheduled for 6:30pm. Games two and three will commence Saturday afternoon, with game one of the double-header scheduled for 1:00pm.
