Pilots defeat Belhaven for first win of season

JACKSON, Miss. - The no. 6 LSU Shreveport Pilots men's basketball team won their first game of the season with a tough road win over the Belhaven Blazers 79-60 on Friday night at Rugg Arena.

LSUS (1-2) shot 47% (17-36) in the first half from the field to build up a 43-36 lead at the break while the Blazers shot 45% (15-33). BU (1-2) lost many opportunities as the Pilot's Derrick Parker shut down their attack with 10 defensive rebounds.

The Pilots finished the game shooting 46% from the field making 29 of 62 while Belhaven slumped off to 25% from the field in the second half to finish at 34% (25-72) for the game. Both teams took their shots from downtown as the Pilots won the three-point battle making eight out of 24 while Belhaven made just six of 22 attempts.

LSUS shot the ball much better than they had in the previous two games making a total of 13 of 16 from the charity stripe while the Blazers made just four of six. The Pilots gathered more rebounds than the Blazers 44-39.

Greg Shyne led all scorers with 28 points after draining four of seven from downtown and a perfect two for two from the charity stripe while Derrick Parker his second double-double on the season with 18 points and 15 boards. Isiah Bazile had 16 points and pulled down six rebounds while Jake Greene and Chris Mitchell each had six points each.  Shyne and Greene helped the Pilot's cause each grabbing seven rebounds.

The Blazer had just two in double figures; Brittion Smith led the team with 11 while Daryl Arnold finished with 10 points. Arnold, Jordan Butts, and Reinis Ozolins all tied for the Blazer lead in rebounding with five boards each.

The next game for the Pilots will be tomorrow against the William Carey Crusaders at Rugg Arena in Jackson at 4 p.m. The Crusaders (0-3) come off a 72-55 loss to Tougaloo on Friday night.
