Pilots crush SAGU in double header sweep

March 30, 2012

WAXAHACHIE, Texas - The no. 2 LSU Shreveport Pilots picked up a double header sweep of the Southwestern Assemblies of God University Lions on Friday at the Waxahachie Sports Complex taking game one 8-2 and dominating the second game 18-2.

GAME 1

The Pilots knocked 15 hits in the seven inning contest for an 8-2 win. The game was close until the Pilots opened the gap with a three-run fourth inning highlighted by a two-run double by Stephen Hobbins to extend the LSUS' lead to 4-0 and later Hobbins scored on a David Dorton single to right center for a 5-0 lead.

Matt Lackie (7-0) picked up the win for the Pilots after allowing eight hits and two runs in a walk-free five strike out performance in six innings of work. Jerry Lawrence worked a scoreless seventh inning while Zach Worrell (0-1) suffered the loss allowing 10 hits and five earned runs.

LSUS added three more runs in the sixth with Devin Greco driving in a run with a double and then David Perkins brought in a pair of runs with a single to center. The Pilots got their first run of the game in the first inning on a RBI-single from Greg Friesen and then got the second run on Kyle Pearson's solo-homer to lead-off the third inning.

SAGU scored their two runs in the bottom of the sixth on four hits.

The Pilots had four batters with multi-hits as Greco led the way going 3-for-4 with a RBI and Friesen was 2-for-3 with a run batted in. Pearson was 2-for-5 with a RBI and Tyler Alton was 2-for-4 in the lead-off spot of the batting order.

GAME 2

The night cap of the twin-bill looked as if it was going to be a pitcher's duel but the Pilot bats heated up later in the game for a dominating win. The LSUS starter Jonathan Burnett (3-0) had an excellent outing for the Pilots as he retired 19 of the first 20 batters that he faced with the only one reaching on a base hit in the fourth inning until the Lions got a pair of hits in the seventh that led to their only two runs of the game. Burnett tossed seven strong innings allowing just three hits, two runs, one walk, and six strikeouts.

David Dorton hit an inside-the-park homer in the top of the fifth inning to extend the LSUS' lead to 4-0 and then the Pilots added three more runs in the top of the sixth.

The visitors added one more run in the eighth inning and then 10 in the top of the ninth as they battered the bullpen with nine hits and only three walks as the Lions went through three pitchers in the inning. Five LSUS batters drove in a run with a single in the inning; Kade Billeaudeaux, Reed Lavallee, Kyle Pearson, Manny Estrada, and Stephen Hobbins while Chance Nerren drove in a pair of runs with a pair of doubles in the inning.

SAGU's only runs came in the seventh when Taylor Froelich connected on a two-run double.

The Pilots improve to 29-3 overall and 16-3 in the RRAC while SAGU falls to 11-21 overall and 0-17 in the RRAC. The series will conclude tomorrow at 1 at the Waxahachie Sports Complex.
