Pilots complete series sweep of HTU

SHREVEPORT, La. - The no. 13 LSU Shreveport Pilots won the final game of the weekend RRAC series against Huston-Tillotson University of Saturday afternoon 12-5 at Pilot Field.

HTU (6-18, 5-13 RRAC) scored the first two runs of the game with a two-run homer from Howard Limuel, his fifth homer of the year. LSUS (26-8, 17-1 RRAC) tied the game at two in the bottom of the second with an RBI-triple from Justin Brodnax who scored on an errand throw from the HTU centerfielder.

The Pilots rallied for three runs in the third to take the lead for good as Chase Wentz brought one home with a single and Curtis Beaudoin drove in a pair with a double to extend the lead to 5-2 after three complete innings of play.

The game remained a three-run difference until the seventh when the Pilots struck for four as Allen Degges had an RBI single and the Pilots base runners took advantage of three wild pitches for the other three runs.

HTU put three on the board in the top of the eighth with as Raul Gomez's two run double highlighted the inning but the Pilots would answer with three of their own in the bottom half as Degges drove in all three with a double off the centerfield wall to extend the Pilots lead to 12-5.

The Pilots used six different pitchers as Cody Boutte (4-1) picked up the win after an inning of relief work and starter Logan Norris tossed four innings in his first collegiate start. He allowed just three hits, two runs, one walk, and two strike outs. HTU starter Vincent Ramirez (3-5) took the loss after allowing eight earned runs in six and 1/3.

Kevin Smith was two for three with two runs scored, Wentz was two for four with a RBI and three runs scored while Justin Brodnax was four for four with a RBI and three runs. Beaudoin was two for five with two RBIs while Degges was two for two with four RBIs off the bench.

The Pilots will have a full schedule of games next week as they begin on Tuesday morning at 11:00 a.m. at Bringhurst Field in Alexandria for the annual DARE-Day game against Louisiana College. The next game at Pilot Field will be at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday against SAGU and then the series continues with a double-header with the Lions on Friday afternoon at Pilot Field. Then the Pilots will travel to J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston to take on Louisiana Tech at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and then again at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
