September 12, 2011
SHREVEPORT, La. - The LSU Shreveport Pilots men's soccer team claimed the first ever Mayor's Cup Trophy at Mayo Field on Monday night as they defeated the Centenary Gents by a final score of 1-0.Both teams played a high intensity first half that lead to a 0-0 halftime score with Centenary (1-1) having the upper hand with a 12-2 shots margin.
LSUS (1-2) upped their tempo in the second half getting away five shots that led to the game's only goal at the 81st minute by Nelson Zelaya with an assist from Luis Valladares. The Pilots outshot the Gents in the second half 5-3 thanks to stellar defense from their back line.
Centenary outshot the Pilots for the game 15-7 but Pilot's goal tender Lance Quini had another outstanding game with 5 saves, none of which were a piece of cake.
"Our defenders and Quini did such a great job for us tonight; the defenders kept stopping good runs that they had and when they got a shot off Quini came up with the save. Centenary has a great team, they played hard. I think this game was everything we anticipated it to be" said LSUS head coach Mike Aguilar.
The Mayor's cup will make its home at LSU Shreveport until the Pilots defend it next season.
The next game for the Pilots will be Thursday afternoon in Jackson, Mississippi, against the Belhaven Blazers at 6 p.m.
